Project Details

This project involves the architectural and structural design for a ground floor residential extension and internal reconfiguration. The scope includes the creation of a 38.12 sqm open-plan lounge, dining, and kitchen area, along with a dedicated office (8.98 sqm), an ensuite (2.43 sqm), and additional storage facilities. The structural design features a proposed foundation plan utilizing 1000mm deep trench foundations, with specialized sewer bridge details and lintels engineered for instances where footings intersect existing drainage systems. The construction specifications prioritize thermal performance and compliance with Building Regulations, particularly regarding fire safety and insulation. The warm flat roof system is designed to achieve a U-value of 0.18 W/m²K, utilizing C24 grade timber joists, 125mm Celotex insulation, and a Sarnafil single-ply waterproof membrane. External walls consist of a cavity wall construction with 102.5mm facing brick to match the existing structure, 90mm high-performance insulation, and lightweight blockwork. Internal partitions are engineered using 90mm x 50mm softwood treated timber studs at 400mm centers, packed with acoustic soundproof quilt to ensure privacy and sound insulation. Modern glazing solutions, including glazed bi-fold doors and roof lights, are specified to meet a window U-value of 1.3 W/m²K and include toughened safety glass in all critical locations.

Role

Structural Engineer/Designer

Services Provided

The scope of services included the preparation of structural calculations for the proposed project. Structural analysis considered applicable wind, snow, dead, and live loads in accordance with the governing building code and project requirements. The work involved the structural analysis and design of all new structural elements required for the project, verifying that each component possessed adequate strength, stability, and serviceability to safely resist the applied gravity and lateral loads. The analysis also confirmed that the proposed structural system maintained a continuous and code-compliant load path from the roof through the foundation.
The services further included the preparation of structural drawings identifying all required structural components and framing systems. The drawings consisted of a foundation plan, ground floor framing plan showing beams above, roof framing plan, structural sections, and supporting structural details. Structural notes and specifications were incorporated to clearly communicate design criteria, material requirements, connection details, and construction requirements. All documents were prepared to facilitate permitting, coordination with other disciplines, and accurate implementation during construction.
