53 Ercall Gardens Residential Extension and Renovation
Project Details
This project involves the architectural redesign and proposed extension of a semi-detached residential property located at 53 Ercall Gardens. The comprehensive scope focuses on maximizing interior living space and modernizing the layout across the ground and first floors to accommodate a contemporary family lifestyle. The ground floor reconfiguration includes a large sitting room (4.60m x 5.46m), a spacious kitchen (5.50m x 2.92m), an entrance porch, and a new side-access bathroom extension. The first-floor plan introduces three well-proportioned bedrooms, including a master bedroom with an integrated ensuite, a shared family bathroom, and the addition of a roof terrace. To ensure neighborly consideration, the design incorporates a privacy fence/screen and new railings surrounding the terrace area. The external site strategy includes the allocation of four designated parking spaces (P1 through P4) and the retention of an existing single-story outbuilding. A detailed drainage layout was engineered to manage environmental impact, featuring proposed routes for both surface and foul water drainage. The system utilizes existing manholes as connection points and incorporates sustainable solutions such as waterbutts to collect runoff for use in onsite planters. All structural elevations—front, rear, left, and right—were designed to harmonize with the existing building fabric while introducing modern functional elements.
Role
Structural Engineer/Designer
Services Provided
The scope of services included the preparation of structural analysis, design calculations, and structural drawings for the proposed structure. Structural calculations considered gravity and environmental loading conditions, including wind, snow, dead, and live loads, in accordance with the governing building code and applicable design standards. The work involved the analysis and design of all primary structural components, including foundations, columns, beams, load-bearing walls, floor joists, headers, roof rafters, ridge beams, and structural connectors, to verify adequate strength, stability, and load transfer throughout the structure. Structural drawings were prepared to illustrate the complete structural system and included foundation plans, ground floor framing plans showing beams above, second-floor framing plans, roof framing plans, structural sections, and detailed construction notes, specifications, and connection details necessary to communicate the design intent and facilitate permitting, coordination, and construction.
