Lot 20, West County Rd – Monroe House
Project Details
This project involves the structural analysis and design of a single-story residential building known as the Monroe House. The comprehensive engineering scope included the design of the wood-framed superstructure, featuring primary members such as Douglas Fir-Larch beams (B1), columns (C1), headers (H1), and load-bearing walls (LBW1). The structure utilizes prefabricated wood trusses for the roof assembly, integrated with high-performance Hubbard Zip System sheathing for the building envelope. The design process was conducted in accordance with the International Building Code (IBC 2021), International Residential Code (IRC 2021), ASCE 7-16 provisions, and ACI 318-19 for concrete elements. A specialized lateral-load-resisting system was engineered using shear walls reinforced with high-capacity Simpson Strong-Tie hold-downs (HDUE3 and HDUE5 series) to ensure structural stability. The building was engineered to withstand significant environmental loads, including a design wind speed of 111 MPH (Exposure Category C), a ground snow load of 25 psf, and requirements for Seismic Design Category A. The foundation system consists of reinforced concrete stem wall footings (2′-6″ wide) and pad footings, all designed for a soil bearing capacity of 1,500 psf with concrete specified at a minimum compressive strength of 3,000 PSI.
Role
Structural Engineer/Designer
Services Provided
The scope of services included the preparation of structural analysis, design calculations, and structural plans for the proposed structure. Structural analysis considered gravity and lateral loading in accordance with the applicable provisions of the International Residential Code (IRC) and ASCE 7. The work involved the design of the foundation system based on the geotechnical recommendations for the project site in Krum, Texas, as well as the design of all load-bearing walls, shear walls, required holdowns, columns, beams, and headers necessary to support the structural loads. Services also included the design of the slab-on-grade or combined footing system as recommended in the soils report, ensuring adequate load transfer and compliance with applicable code requirements. Structural drawings were prepared to communicate the design and included foundation plans, coordinated roof framing plans developed in conjunction with the truss manufacturer, shear wall layout plans, structural building section views, and typical structural details, notes, and specifications required for permitting, coordination, and construction.
