Project Details

This project involves the structural analysis and engineering for a proposed addition and remodel of an existing two-story single-family residence. The comprehensive scope required engineering solutions for the entire structural assembly, including rafters, floor joists, beams, columns, stair stringers, and headers, all supported by a newly designed foundation system integrated with the existing structure. The primary structure utilizes light-frame wood construction featuring Douglas Fir-Larch (No. 1 and No. 2 grades) framing and high-strength structural wood panel sheathing. The design process included a rigorous structural analysis to ensure the extension could safely withstand environmental loads. The structural elements were engineered in accordance with the 2022 California Building Code (CBC), 2022 California Residential Code (CRC), ASCE 7-16, and ACI 318-19 provisions. Special attention was given to lateral load resistance through the implementation of wood-framed shear walls sheathed with wood structural panels, providing stability against a basic design wind speed of 96 MPH and requirements for Seismic Design Category D. The foundation system features independent reinforced concrete pad and wall footings designed to perform reliably under a soil bearing capacity of 1,500 psf.

Role

Structural Engineer/Designer

Services Provided

The scope of structural engineering services included the preparation of comprehensive structural calculations and structural drawings for the proposed project. Structural calculations were performed to analyze dead, live, wind, seismic, snow, and uplift loads in accordance with applicable governing building codes and standards. The work encompassed the structural analysis and design of all primary and secondary structural components, including foundations, shear walls, load-bearing walls, columns, beams, floor joists, headers, stair stringers, guardrail posts, and all required connectors and fastening systems. The calculations verified the adequacy of each structural element to safely resist gravity and lateral loads and ensured the development of a continuous and code-compliant load path throughout the structure.
Structural drawings were prepared to clearly illustrate the structural design for permitting, coordination, and construction. The drawing set included a Foundation Plan identifying the layout and sizing of foundations; a Second Floor Framing Plan and Roof Framing Plan showing the configuration, spacing, and sizing of framing members; and Shear Wall Layout Plans for both the First and Second Floors indicating the location and designation of lateral force-resisting elements. The drawings also included structural building section views, including both longitudinal and cross-sections, to clarify vertical relationships and load transfer within the structure. In addition, the set included typical structural details, general structural notes, and technical specifications necessary to guide construction and ensure compliance with applicable codes and project requirements.
