Project Details

This project involves the structural design and engineering for a proposed residential house renovation and porch modification. The comprehensive scope required modern engineering solutions for the entire structural assembly, including roof rafters, ridge beams, hip beams, king posts, and ceiling joists, all supported by a specifically designed masonry wall and foundation system. The primary structure utilizes Douglas Fir-Larch (No. 1 and No. 2) wood framing integrated with 8-inch thick reinforced concrete masonry units (CMU) and specifically engineered lintel beams to ensure a durable assembly. The design process included a rigorous structural analysis and loading assessment to ensure the renovation could safely withstand environmental and gravity loads. The structural elements were engineered in accordance with the Florida Building Code (FBC 2023), ASCE 7-22, and ACI 318-14 provisions. Special attention was given to lateral load resistance for a site located in a hurricane-prone region, providing stability against ultimate wind speeds of 149 MPH and meeting requirements for Seismic Risk Category II. The foundation system features independent reinforced concrete wall footings designed to perform reliably under a soil bearing capacity of 1,500 psf.

Role

Structural Engineer/Designer

Services Provided

The scope of services included the preparation of architectural and structural documents for the proposed project. The architectural package included the preparation of demolition/existing and proposed floor plans, demolition/existing and proposed roof plans, proposed front, left, and right-side elevations, and longitudinal and cross sections for the new porch only. The work also included schedules of doors and windows and enlarged architectural details to clearly communicate dimensions, material interfaces, and construction requirements.
The structural package included the preparation of structural calculations for all new structural elements, including footings, shear walls, columns, beams, headers, roof rafters or trusses, and connectors to verify structural adequacy and code compliance. Structural drawings were prepared consisting of foundation plans, roof framing plans, shear wall layout plans, and typical structural framing details, notes, and specifications to clearly define the structural system, member requirements, and construction criteria for implementation and coordination.
