Project Details

This project involves the structural modification of an existing building to accommodate a new balcony addition and interior renovations. The scope required modern structural engineering solutions integrating wood framing and structural steel elements, supported by foundations specifically designed to perform under high seismic demands.

The design process included a thorough assessment of the existing structural system to ensure compatibility with the new loads and framing configurations. The structural elements were engineered in accordance with the latest California Building Code (CBC) and ASCE 7 seismic provisions, focusing on safety, serviceability, and constructability. Special attention was given to lateral load resistance, connection detailing, and foundation reinforcement to ensure the structure’s overall stability and resilience under seismic and wind forces.

Role

Structural Engineer/Designer

Services Provided

The scope of work included the preparation of comprehensive structural calculations and construction drawings in support of the project’s design and permitting requirements. The structural calculations covered detailed loading analyses for wind, seismic, dead, and live loads, along with the analysis and design of all major structural elements including foundations, shear walls, columns, beams, headers, joists, and connectors.

The structural drawings consisted of a complete set of plans and details necessary for construction and coordination, including the foundation plan, balcony framing plan, shear wall layout and framing elevations, and building section views. Typical structural details, notes, and specifications were also provided to ensure code compliance, constructability, and consistency with the architectural and civil disciplines.
