Proposed Steel Store Structure
Project Details
This project involves the structural design and engineering of a proposed steel store structure measuring approximately 100′-0″ x 86′-7″.The comprehensive scope required modern engineering solutions for the entire building assembly, including W-shape columns, girders, and beams integrated with a detailed system of roof trusses and purlins. The primary framing utilizes high-strength A992 structural steel (Fy = 50 ksi), while the secondary framing members consist of cold-formed steel and specialized pipe sections. The design process included a rigorous structural analysis using 3-D finite element modeling to ensure the building could safely withstand diverse environmental loads. The structural elements were engineered in accordance with the 2022 California Building Code (CBC), ASCE 7-16, and ACI 318-19 provisions. Special attention was given to lateral load resistance, with the structure designed to withstand 93 MPH basic wind speeds (Exposure Category B) and meet the stringent requirements of Seismic Design Category D. The foundation system features independent reinforced concrete pad footings (F1, F2, F3) and strip footings designed to perform reliably under a soil bearing capacity of 1,500 psf using 4,000 psi concrete.
Role
Structural Engineer/Designer
Services Provided
The scope of services includes the preparation of comprehensive structural calculations and structural drawings for the proposed structure. Structural calculations shall include complete loading analyses in accordance with the applicable provisions of the governing building code and design standards, including evaluation of wind, seismic, dead, and live loads as applicable to the project site. The engineering work shall encompass the structural analysis and design of all primary structural components to ensure adequate strength, stability, and a continuous load path. This includes the structural design and verification of foundations, steel columns, steel beams, steel rafters, purlins, girts, and required steel connections necessary to safely resist gravity and lateral loads.
Structural drawings shall include a Foundation Plan identifying the layout of footings, foundation elements, and anchor requirements; a 2nd Floor Framing Plan illustrating the arrangement and sizing of structural framing members; and a Roof Framing Plan indicating rafters, purlins, and associated framing components. The drawing set shall also include Steel Framing Elevations per gridline to coordinate the vertical arrangement of steel members and load paths. Additional drawings will include foundation details, steel connection details, and typical structural details necessary for proper fabrication and construction. General structural notes and technical specifications will also be provided to support permitting, coordination with other disciplines, and construction implementation, ensuring clarity and compliance with applicable codes and project requirements.
