Project Details

This project involves the structural analysis and detailed engineering design for a single-story residential building featuring approximately 2,480 square feet of living space. The comprehensive engineering scope included the design of the primary gravity-load-carrying members, such as Douglas Fir-Larch No. 1 and No. 2 beams, columns, and headers, as well as the development of a lateral force-resisting system using wood-sheathed shear walls. The structural design was performed in accordance with the International Building Code (IBC 2021), the International Residential Code (IRC 2021), and ASCE 7-16 provisions to ensure the safety and longevity of the residence. The design process included a rigorous evaluation of environmental loads, accounting for a basic wind speed of 108 MPH (Exposure Category B), requirements for Seismic Design Category B, and a ground snow load of 20 psf. Lateral stability is provided by a network of segmented wood shear walls integrated with Simpson Strong-Tie hold-down systems (such as HDUE5 models) to resist uplift and overturning forces. The foundation system features reinforced concrete stem wall footings and independent pad footings engineered to perform reliably under an allowable soil bearing capacity of 1,500 psf. High-strength structural connections, including Simpson PB66 post bases, were specified to provide a continuous load path from the pre-engineered wood roof truss system through the load-bearing walls and down to the concrete foundation.

Services Provided

The scope of services included the preparation of structural analysis, design calculations, and structural drawings for the proposed structure in Krum, Texas. Structural analyses were performed for applicable gravity and lateral loads in accordance with the International Residential Code (IRC), ASCE 7, and the governing building code requirements. The work involved the design of the foundation system based on the recommendations provided in the geotechnical report, including the design of slab-on-grade or combined footing systems as required by site conditions. Structural design calculations were prepared for all load-bearing walls, shear walls, holdowns, columns, beams, and headers necessary to support and stabilize the structure. The analysis verified that all structural elements were capable of safely resisting gravity and lateral loads while maintaining a continuous and code-compliant load path. The services also included the preparation of structural drawings consisting of foundation plans, roof framing plans coordinated with the truss manufacturer, shear wall layout plans, structural building section views, and typical structural details, notes, and specifications. All documents were prepared to facilitate permitting, coordination, and accurate implementation during construction.
