Proposed Residential at 62 Main Street
Project Details
This project involves the comprehensive structural analysis and engineering of a proposed residential timber-frame building. The scope of work required modern engineering solutions for the entire assembly, including the structural design of roof rafters, ledgers, columns, beams, bearing walls, and buttress walls, all supported by a specifically engineered foundation system. The primary structure utilizes high-strength C24 softwood timber framing, featuring 44x135mm sections for the external leaf walls and roof rafters to ensure a durable and lightweight assembly. The design process included a rigorous analysis to ensure the structure safely withstands environmental loads in accordance with Eurocode standards, specifically EN 1991 for loading, EN 1995 for timber structures, and EN 1997 for geotechnical design. Structural elements were engineered to resist a characteristic snow load of 0.31 KPa and wind pressures derived from a fundamental basic wind velocity of 26.1 m/s. Stability assessments confirmed the design is safe against sliding and overturning under lateral wind forces, with factors of safety exceeding required minimums. The foundation system features both reinforced concrete pad footings and a raft foundation designed to perform reliably under an allowable soil bearing pressure of 100.0 kN/m².
Role
Structural Engineer/Designer
Services Provided
The scope of services included the preparation of structural calculations and structural markup drawings for the proposed structure. Structural analysis considered wind, snow, dead, and live loads in accordance with the applicable building code and project-specific design criteria. The work involved the structural analysis and design of the roof rafters, bearing walls, buttress walls, and foundations to verify adequate strength, stability, and serviceability under the governing design loads. The services also included the preparation of structural markup drawings identifying the required revisions and engineering recommendations to facilitate coordination, plan review, and implementation during construction.
