Proposed Residential Building at 98 Avenue Road
Project Details
This project involves the comprehensive structural analysis and design for a new multi-unit residential development. The scope of work encompasses the engineering of primary structural systems, including C24 grade timber floor joists and roof rafters, integrated with a structural steel frame utilizing S275 grade mild steel beams and specialized cranked beam assemblies. The structure features detailed framing plans for multiple levels, including basement, ground, first, and second floors, all supported by a robust foundation system. The engineering design was conducted in strict accordance with Eurocodes, specifically BS EN 1990 for structural design basis, BS EN 1991 for environmental loading (including wind and snow analysis), and specialized codes for steel (BS EN 1993), timber (BS EN 1995), and concrete (BS EN 1992). The foundation design utilizes a 200mm thick reinforced concrete slab-on-grade with A393 steel mesh, complemented by C30 concrete wall footings and specifically engineered retaining walls (RW1 and RW2) to accommodate the proposed basement level. A critical component of the project is the Temporary Works design, which outlines a prescribed “hit and miss” excavation sequence for the basement. This sequencing utilizes 25mm thick plywood panels, 200mm x 100mm C24 timber walings, and adjustable EP C25 structural props to maintain site stability and protect adjacent structures during construction. Detailed connection designs, including fin plate and bolted assemblies for roof and cranked beams, were analyzed to ensure total structural integrity under all factored load combinations.
Role
Structural Engineer/Designer
Services Provided
The scope of services included the preparation of structural analysis, structural calculations, and structural drawings for the proposed building. Structural analysis considered wind, snow, dead, and live loads in accordance with the applicable building code and project-specific design criteria. The work involved the structural analysis and design of the primary structural system, including foundations, basement retaining walls, shear/stability walls or cores, load-bearing walls, columns, beams, floor systems, headers/lintels, stair stringers, roof framing members, and structural connections, to ensure adequate strength, stability, and serviceability. The services also included the preparation of structural drawings consisting of the basement/foundation plan, ground, first, second, and third floor framing plans, roof framing plan, structural building section views (longitudinal and cross-sections), and typical structural details, general notes, and specifications required for permitting, coordination, and construction.
