Proposed Residential Log Cabin
Project Details
This project involves the structural design and engineering of a residential log cabin measuring approximately 11.7m x 5.95m, with a total height of approximately 5.8m. The comprehensive scope required modern engineering solutions for a dual-leaf timber wall system, a duopitch roof assembly, and a specific foundation system. The primary structure utilizes high-strength C24 softwood timber for all critical structural members, including walls, floor joists, and rafters. The design features an external wall construction consisting of 44x135mm horizontal timber leaves with 120mm of Celotex insulation, achieving a total thickness of approximately 208mm. The floor system is engineered with 44x270mm joists spaced at 400mm centers to support a live load of 1.5 kPa, while the roof utilizes 44x135mm rafters at 725mm centers beneath a bitumen shingle finish. The structural analysis was conducted in accordance with Eurocode standards, specifically EN1991 for environmental loading and EN1995 for timber design. The building was engineered to withstand a wind load of 0.88 kPa and a snow load of 0.34 kPa based on its specific altitude and terrain category. The foundation system utilizes independent reinforced concrete pad footings (C30/37 concrete class) designed to perform reliably under a presumed soil bearing capacity of 100 kN/m².
Role
Structural Engineer/Designer
Services Provided
The scope of services included the preparation of structural calculations and structural markup drawings for the proposed structure. Structural calculations included loading analyses for wind, snow, dead, and live loads, as well as the structural analysis and design of the roof rafters, bearing walls, buttress walls, and foundations to ensure compliance with the applicable building code and project requirements. The services also included the preparation of structural markup drawings identifying the required revisions and detailing necessary for coordination and implementation during the design development process.
