Project Details

This project involves the structural design and engineering for a two-story extension and comprehensive refurbishment of an existing residential dwelling. The scope required modern engineering solutions for a complex structural assemby, including new steel beams, floor and roof joists, columns, and a series of a specialized padstones. The design ensures the seamless integration of new structural elements, with the existing building fabric, utilizing high-strength materials such as S355 grade steel for floor and roof beams (UKB sections) and C24 grade timber for joists and rafters. The structural analysis addressed diverse load requirements, ensuring compliance with Building Regulations and relevant British Standards (BS 8110, BS EN 206-1, and BS 8500-2). For the foundation system, 600mm x 600mm trench fill foundations were engineered to be founded at a minimum of 1000mm below ground level, with specific provisions for concrete mix strength grade C25. Lateral stability for the warm flat roof is provided through the use of galvanized mild steel restraint straps anchored to the wall plates, while internal partitions utilize softwood studs with acoustic insulation. The design also incorporates essential safety and performance specifications, including half-hour fire resistance for steel members through intumescent painting or fireboard encasement, and high-performance partial fill cavity walls designed to achieve a minimum U-value of 0.28W/m²K. All works were planned in accordance with CDM Regulations 2015, ensuring a comprehensive approach to health, safety, and structural integrity throughout the construction phase.

Role

Structural Engineer/Designer

Services Provided

The scope of services included the preparation of structural analysis, design calculations, and structural plans for the proposed structure. Structural calculations considered loading analyses for wind, snow, dead, and live loads, together with the structural analysis and design of all structural components to verify adequate strength, stability, and load transfer in accordance with applicable codes and project requirements. The services also included the preparation of structural drawings consisting of the foundation plan, ground floor plan showing beams above, first floor framing plan, roof framing plan, structural sections, and structural details, notes, and specifications required to clearly communicate the structural design intent and construction requirements.
