Project Details

This project involves the structural analysis and engineering of a reinforced concrete foundation system for a proposed structure measuring approximately 44′ x 42′. The comprehensive scope required modern engineering solutions for the design of pad footings (PF1 and PF2) and wall footings (WF1) to support a proposed new house. The primary foundation utilizes high-strength 4,000 psi compressive strength concrete integrated with Grade 60 reinforcing steel bars to ensure a durable and stable assembly. The design process included a rigorous structural analysis to ensure the foundation could safely withstand various environmental and applied loads. The structural elements were engineered in accordance with the International Building Code (IBC 2021), International Residential Code (IRC 2021), ACI 318-19, and ASCE 7-16 provisions. Special attention was given to lateral load resistance, with the system designed to provide stability against wind speeds of 134 MPH and requirements for Seismic Design Category A. Load calculations also accounted for a superimposed dead load of 10 psf specifically for a Trojan Aircraft. The foundation system features independent reinforced concrete pad footings, ranging in size up to 4.25′ x 4.25′, and continuous wall footings, all designed to perform reliably under a gross allowable soil bearing capacity of 1,500 psf.

Role

Structural Engineer/Designer

Services Provided

The scope of services included the preparation of structural analysis, design calculations, and structural drawings for a new foundation system, including all required footing specifications. Structural calculations considered loading analyses for dead, live, wind, and seismic loads, as applicable, in accordance with governing codes and site conditions. The work involved the design and verification of continuous footings, isolated pad footings, thickened-edge slabs, anchorages, bearing capacities per geotechnical criteria, and step footing or retaining curb checks where grade differentials occurred. Coordination of slab penetrations, sleeves, and utility trenches affecting the foundation system was also included. The services further included the preparation of CAD structural drawings consisting of a foundation plan with dimensions, footing sizes, slab thickening, and keynotes, together with foundation/slab sections, wall-footing step details, and typical details for reinforcing steel, anchor bolts/holdowns, dowels at existing conditions, vapor barrier/base, and contraction joints. General structural notes and specifications suitable for permitting and construction coordination were also provided.
